A New Week A New Thought

I have not blogged since the end of #UgBlogWeek. It’s not that I have not been thinking about it and I do not want to blame writer’s block. It was as though all the months posts were exhausted in that week! 🙂

That being said, I feel alive when I start to write. It’s as though I am finally getting to breathe fresh unadulterated air after a night in the mines of life.

I just thought I would share a few things from the two weeks that have passed.

I wish we did not have to spend so much on money on elections yet in and of itself they contribute little to national development. I am not saying we should not vote. I am saying there’s so much money wasted during these four months that could have been put to better use. I know I need to be educated on the economics involved but I feel there’s much ado about nothing during campaign period.

I don’t know the stats but do the campaigns actually sway popular opinion in Uganda?

The one plus is that the opposition isn’t persecuted for trying to talk to their people because in this period, talking to their supporters is finally legal. Only 3 months in 5 years can the opposition talk to their people legally, outside that period, they are probably unlawfully assembling and being painted with pink tear gas.

Terror Attacks and Social Media

It is sad whenever one group of human beings decide to mindlessly kill others over an ideal. This is not new, however, and is bound to keep on happening. It was sad that France went through that terror attack in Paris over the weekend. On the same weekend, there were attacks in Lebanon. Before that, a Russian jet had crashed in Egypt, and there were warnings of possible genocide in Burundi.

While popular social media networks like Facebook and Youtube went ahead to create special filters for Profile Pages with a flag of France, there was a backlash on social media about selective concern.

I might understand the anger this is causing people because only the important nations seem to get any kind of attention like this. However, I also understand the people themselves only care about what the media feeds them. When #FreeOurGirls ran as a campaign, some complained that it was useless hashtagivism. Despite the news from Burundi and Syria, no one seems to act like they care.

I came across a quote on Twitter which went something like “a new hen attracts more attention from the cocks than an old one.” Essentially new terror strikes more fear than old terror.

I think sometimes we as humans  remember at the wrong time. No one should crucify Facebook for their France filter. After all, France ideally means a lot more financially than Beirut or Bujumbura or Lagos to Facebook.

That being said, I was trying desperately to find something to close with to give some kind of hope. Something that says it will be well. In truth the world is always in turmoil, and many times our hearts follow suit. A little known portion in the Bible (Luke 13 )talks about abating tragedy by offering repentance.

13 There were some present at that very time who told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered thus? 3 I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen upon whom the tower in Silo′am fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”

It looks harsh but to me it simply says, die before your death. Let life live in place of you. There is more to say on this but no time, thus my closing is

“I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Jesus – John 16:33

Nice week.

  1. The new hen quote makes sense, andt also that France is France.
Like if it were the US, we'd still have the filter on facebook and buildings lit up. The US is an old hen.. so we just deal with these things and receive the peace of God.

    Good thoughts up there 🙂
